In the Beginners Program, you will learn how to defend yourself with different techniques, such as throws, takedowns, ground positioning, and submissions that focus on dealing with someone who may be bigger or stronger than you. We will help you learn to nurture the mental strengths and physical skills needed if you are ever faced with a scenario where you have to physically defend yourself.
Although during training our students refine their fighting and defensive skill sets, what most people do not realize is that these same training methods also help with your daily battles in life, like self-confidence, relationships at work, school, and at home, discipline, and stress.
Our Martial Arts Style
At WāhiBJJ we specialize in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), which is universally regarded as the most effective form of ground fighting and self defense. This style became famous outside of Brazil in the early 1990’s, after an athlete named Royce Gracie used BJJ to dominate much larger and stronger opponents in the initial Ultimate Fighting Championship. Over the past three decades, the worldwide popularity of BJJ has grown dramatically as a sport, self defense martial art, and subculture.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is often referred to as the “gentle art,” because it enables a much smaller individual to defeat a larger and stronger attacker by using leverage and superior positioning. Perhaps the most unique aspect of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it introduces adults and children to a non-violent, effective, and practical form of self defense. With superior positioning and leverage, students learn to deal with larger opponents and avoid potentially very dangerous situations.
What makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu special is that it focuses on the aspect where most fights take place: the ground. By using leverage, technique, and timing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners are able to reverse bad positions, learn how to control opponents through superior body positioning, and apply submissions that isolate an opponents neck or limbs which forces the opponent to either give up or face serious injuries.
